Well, it appears that the end of August is approaching and we all know what happens at the end of August: school starts again!
To honor this annual occasion Pamela Paul at the New York Times dedicated her Sunday Children’s Bookshelf (August 21, 2011) to books about going back to school. One of our PGW publishers, Groundwood Books, has their beautiful Fall title, A Few Blocks by Cybèle Young, featured in Pamela’s selection.
A Few Blocks follows siblings Ferdie and Viola on their walk to school. Ferdie is not feeling up for the journey so his older sister, Viola, helps him through playful, imaginative scenes to move him along. “This is the rare story in which siblings offer mutual support rather than ripping each other to psychological bits” says Pamela Paul of Young’s creative back-to-school tale. The illustrations are part of what make this book so special. Cybèle Young is known for her miniature paper sculptures and here she has illustrated Fergie and Viola’s adventures in intricate drawings and paper collages. This is certainly a title that should help reluctant school goers and siblings alike.
