Here is one of my favorite picture books for Fall from Canadian publisher Owlkids. Up Above and Down Below, written and illustrated by Paloma Valdivia, gives us a new perspective of people who live in different parts of the world. Valdivia’s quirky illustrations and simple text show the same people living up above that live down below; be sure to keep a careful eye on the differences that show up in the two places because they are often subtle. Though I often find myself drawn to books illustrated in vibrant colors, the mostly muted palette is wonderful here making the splashes of blues and greens extra special. It’s nice to find a story that shows a big idea with a simple yet powerful execution. A great new book for teaching children that people are the same except for slight differences around the world.
