Five Kehrer Verlag photo collections are winners in the Photo District News 2016 Photo Annual! Dima Gavrysh’s Inshallah was selected because it “explores the Soviet and American occupations of Afghanistan and draws on Gavrysh’s childhood fantasies that romanticized the military and intertwine with his past and present personal conflicts.” Of Hey Mister, Throw Me Some Beads!, the judges said, “[Bruce] Gilden, known for his iconic New York City street photographs, captures the energy of the Carnival crowds on Bourbon Street with the same raw intensity and poignancy.” Matt Henry was praised for “employ[ing] his own prop and costume styling, storyboarding and set design” in Short Stories: Recreated Scenes from America during the 1960s and 1970s. The “intimate exploration” The Lams of Ludlow Street is also a winner. The judges’ citation for Blank Pages of an Iranian Photo Album reads, “Tavakolian, an Iranian photographer, mixes artistic creation and journalism in this book, taking inspiration from the traditional Iranian family photo album to deftly chronicle middle-class life by following Iranians from several generations with her camera.” In the Personal category, Jesse Burke won for his work documenting road trips in nature with his daughter, collected in Wild and Precious, published by Daylight Books last fall. A photo from that collection is also a winner in the American Photography 32 competition hosted by AI-AP. Congratulations to Kehrer Verlag, Daylight Books, and these incredible photographers!
